A new day has dawned for Mexican food in LA with the launch of Tocaya Organica, a modern organic take on Mexican fare. Gone are the cheese and sauce drenched enchiladas and carb heavy options of the traditional Mexican American restaurant. In its place, healthier, lighter options.
Walking into Tocaya is an experience in itself. Clean, bright and modern, this order-at-the-counter style space is both inviting and efficient. The tiled floors and wooden beams you expect in a Mexican restaurant are there, but the colors are dusted grays, creams, tans and white, accented with pops of brass and seafoam green. At the newly opened location at Century City Mall there’s even oversized outdoor chairs with coffee tables in a living room type setting.
Drink options include signature Casamigos margaritas as well as a variety of frescas including watermelon limeade, strawberry basil limeade and horchata plus my personal favorite, Harmless Coconut Water. The menu is a whole different story, healthy bowls, gluten free and vegan options, plantains with your guac as an alternative to chips. You can even design your own tacos. First you pick a style like Cali Green (avocados and slices onion) or Al Pastor (grilled pineapple salsa and arbol salsa), then pick a protein and your queso and viola. There’s also tasty salads, fajitas and some of the best Mexican street corn I’ve tasted in LA. If you’ve got finicky eaters, there’s also a kids menu featuring the usual kids items plus sweet corn tamales.
With five locations and four on their way, Tocaya is a family friendly crowd pleaser for all!
