REVIEW: OVO

The magic that is Cirque returned to Santa Monica this month with a new show aptly named “Ovo.” Its the journey in the day of a life of a group of lively insects and the search for a lost egg “Ovo.” As always Cirque delivers with fantastical costumes and a stage that comes to life on its own. You truly believe you are below ground at times, watching ants go about their busy business. The acrobatics are breathtaking as always. I was particularly impressed with the skills of the jumping crickets who bounced off of trampolines onto a climbing wall at the back of the stage. It was fascinating to watch the performers skitter across the wall with insect-like precision, crawling over one another to get to the next stunt. The high-wire stunts were no less impressive with flying trapeze acrobatics, silk ropes that held moths who were romatically entwined in their air-bound feats and a slack-wire artist who even rode a unicycle in a headstand on a single wire. The characters who bound the show together, the ladybug, the foreigner and master flipo were terrific in their bug-like comedic banter and everyone in the audience was laughing. I particularly loved the music in this show as it was sung in an “unlanguage” one that doesn’t really exist by a very talented troupe of cockroaches. Cirque as always was a magical feat. It was a just a wee bit loud and perhaps too bizarre for my 3 year old but the 6 year old in front of us loved every minute of it!

Dates: NOW through March 25

Where: Under the Big Top at the Santa Monica Pier

Plot: OVO, meaning “egg” in Portuguese, is a headlong rush into a colorful ecosystem teeming with life, where insects work, eat, crawl, flutter, play, fight and look for love in a non-stop riot of energy and movement.  When a mysterious egg appears in their midst, the insects are awestruck and intensely curious about this iconic object that represents the enigma and cycles of their lives. It is love at first sight when a gawky, quirky insect arrives in this bustling community and a fabulous ladybug catches his eye – and the feeling is mutual.
