What exactly is Expressing Motherhood? A few years ago I was invited by my friend Susanna Morgan (who was then blogging at Not June) to see her perform her one-woman monologue at something called Expressing Motherhood. I wasn’t really sure what I was getting into, but a group of us from our mom blogger Facebook group went and what we discovered was magic. We laughed, we cried, we were enlightened as these amazing moms, got up on stage and shared their personal stories. We even made new friends. I think that was the first time I saw Michelle Villemaire of HomeMadeMimi perform. She’s hilarious! And Susanna, had us laughing so hard it hurt. (She’s not blogging anymore but I keep telling her that her Facebook posts would make a hilarious coffee table book.)
At Expressing Motherhood (#ExMoShow) moms share their stories. They get up on stage and let it all loose. Anyone can perform. You just apply online to be accepted for a show. Its a also a heck of a lot of fun. ExMo takes place all over the country but it originated and is produced from LA, by one spunky lady, Lindsay Kavet, who I am thrilled to have gotten to know over the past few years. Her passion for motherhood, storytelling and car seat safety (thats another story) inspires us everyday.
1. Tell us a little about ExMo?
Expressing Motherhood is a national play, started here in LA, that showcases people sharing their stories on stage.
2. What made you want to start ExMo?
I was a SAHM and dying to be creative, keep my foot in the water and also maintain being with my kids most of the time.
3. What is it about LA that benefits your business most?
So many creative souls and the theatre scene here is welcoming.
4. Tell us about taking ExMo across the country. Hows that going? What are moms in other cities saying?
#ExMoShow went to NYC a year after its conception and sold out off-off Broadway. I’m now having Local Producers help bring it to their town. It’s wonderful to reach all corners of our country. The show has been to NYC, Boston, Chicago, Santa Barbara, The South Bay, Sioux Falls and is headed to Louisvile, Dubuque and Portland!
5. Tell us a little about yourself. Are you an LA native? Where did you grow up? How did you end up in LA?
Born in LA and raised across the country, with most of my time in South Dakota and Iowa. It was in my bones to come back here to be in the entertainment industry.
6. Will you be performing at Expressing Motherhood? Is it funny? Sad?
I have performed multiple times, but not this time. The show is just like motherhood, relentless and filled with both comedic and dramatic moments. It’s a cathartic experience.
The next Expressing Motherhood show takes place April 23rd at 6:30 pm in Santa Monica. Details and tickets online. And …Susanna mentioned above will be back! In addition to a number of other moms we are featuring over the coming weeks. I’ve already got my tickets. I hope to see you there!
