In Defense of Honest

honest babyI have tried almost every Honest product out there. I’ve tried  them because I believe wholeheartedly in what founders Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan strive to achieve. They are changing our expectations about the products that we use every day, in our homes, on our skin and even products we consume – like vitamins. When they launched this company several years ago it was with a mission, a mission to offer families options, to open our eyes to the possibility of something different and to shake up the industry. And they succeeded.

“Alba and Gavigan didn’t just set out to make natural products–they set out to completely disrupt the market and raise the bar for companies like Johnson & Johnson and Procter & Gamble. For years, the children’s product and personal care industry has formulated products without taking into account links between parabens and hormone disruption, synthetic fibers and Toxic Shock Syndrome, or synthetic fragrance and allergies–to name just a few. Honest did.” -Rachel Sarnoff, Mommy Greenest (Read the full article).

Do I love every Honest product? I have my favorites. In particular their body oil which is an incredible moisturizer and, ironically, the first thing I apply when I get sunburned. Your Honest favorites may be different from mine. But thats the same with every product line I use. I like different products from different lines for different reasons.

I have to admit, I haven’t tried the spray sunscreen that is currently a hot topic of debate all over the internet. I haven’t tried it because  we (my daughter and I)  are exceptionally fair skinned and I know from years of trial and error with applying sunscreens that anyone with fair skin needs to use a mineral based product liberally applied to the skin, preferably a cream, like Honest’s Sunscreen Stick.

A few years ago my daughter and I appeared in a segment on ABC7 with our personal dermatologist, Dr. Robin Schaffran to share with viewers her tips for applying sunscreen. Dr. Schaffran says that even when you’re applying a sunscreen with SPF 30 if you don’t apply the right amount in every one of the 11 zones of your body, you may actually only be getting an SPF of 10.  So its not just what you use, its how you use it. Dr. Schaffran also recommends that you apply mineral-based protection using ingredients like titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. So – before you going posting angry statements about how terrible a product is, you need to consider if it was the right product for your skin type, the situation you were in and how you applied it. If you can answer those questions with reasonable answers and still end up with the assumption that a product isn’t doing its job, then of course you should alert the manufacturer. The folks at Honest appreciate knowing that they need to do a little more work on a product. If it isn’t working they want to fix it. They would never want you or your family to suffer.

I know Jessica Alba and Christopher Gavigan personally. I know what great parents they are. I know how much they care about their children and their families’ health. This is why they do what they do every day. It started with creating products for the people they love. And it expands to ensuring the quality of what they do for families worldwide. That’s why they produce non-GMO baby formula that closely resembles the nutrients in breast milk, ultra absorbent, eco-friendly diapers — made with naturally derived, plant-based & sustainable materials, wipes with no harsh chemicals, all natural shampoo, hand soap and body wash, biodegradeable and environmentally safe home cleaning products, the highest quality vitamins and DHA Omega 3 and organic tampons, pads and liners. Their products bear the stamp of approval from organizations including Healthy Child, Green America and Cruelty Free.

Whatever you may read about Honest this week, remember that they care. They cared enough to hear the comments, immediately address the issue and work to resolve it right away. No product company is perfect. All we can ask is that they do the right thing and do their best. At least we know at Honest thats what they do.
