DRAG Your Husband to See Kinky Boots!

Kinky Boots

Just to be clear, I don’t like musicals that are made from movies (hello Dirty Dancing). But Kinky Boots, the musical written by legends Cyndi Lauper and Harvey Fierstein, is a surprisingly fun night out. There is enough  story to keep it moving, jamming music, and an abundance of laughs.

The plot revolves around the noble Charlie Price, son of a shoe factory owner trying to save his late father’s legacy. After he realizes the dire straights the business is in, he pairs up with Lola, the local drag queen with a heart of gold. They strive to save the factory by creating a line of fantastical boots for drag queens and men who need a little extra support in the insole.

The cast is superb, and that helps keep the show grounded in it’s outrageousness. J. Harrison Ghee nails the leading role of Lola, sporting the longest, cellulite-free legs seen on the stage in a long time. Adam Caplan is fabulous, belting out the high notes with believable verve. The standout performance of the night, however, is Tiffany Engen. She elevates the supporting “girlfriend” role to a comedic highlight, and in doing so shows that a great actress can shine if given the opportunity.

This show is recommended for ages 10+, although it is relatively tame as far as sex and language. The best part of the show (besides the drag-tastic musical numbers featuring spectacular men in high heels) is the underlying message; acceptance of others.

Kinky Boots is fantastic date night for you and your mate, or you and your older kids. So put on your high heels and go!

Kinky Boots is running at the Pantages Theater in Hollywood through April 24th, 2016 and you can get tickets and info here.
