The love of a dog truly brings people together. In the heartwarming movie, Dog Days, we are taken on a whirlwind adventure through the city of Los Angeles as the stories of numerous people are intertwined thanks to their dogs (think PG version of Love, Actually). There’s laughter, there’s tears and there’s a lot of oohs and aahs over the dogs. They are cute!!!
In the movie Liz, the dedicated morning show anchor, meets her match in a former football player co-host and possible love interest. They bond over their dogs and his chivalry. (I gotta find out where that dog beach is that they keep frequenting!!) There’s a couple of meet cutes (a term coined from another fave romance movie – The Holiday) in this portion of the story. I love a good meet cute!
Then there’s Gertrude. This loveable Chihahua with a soft spot on her head, hence the pink helmet, creates a soft spot in the heart of barista Tara (Vanessa Hudgens) who follows Gertrude to New Tricks Dog Rescue and finds her purpose and love. This is a central point of the movie – one of self discovery, of finding one’s purpose and along the way, finding love all thanks to the love of a dog.
“I am I because my little dog knows me” – Gertrude Stein
The way these stories and told and interwoven is really impressive. The writers Elissa Matsueda and Erica Oyama did an incredible job. The cast is really stellar too. I was laughing hysterically over the pregnant mom-to-be of twins played by Jessica St. Clair and her worthless but loving husband played by Thomas Lennon. Both actors nailed it. Pregnancy does make us a little crazy! The hilarious Adam Pally is called in to take care of and falls in love with his pregnant sister’s dog and he too, seems to find his way thanks to big, loveable Charlie.
And they didn’t miss a beat when they cast Ron Cephas Jones (This is Us) to play Walter to Finn Wolfhard’s (Stranger Things) Tyler, an elderly gentleman and a teenager who form an unlikely friendship while trying to find Walter’s missing pug Mabel.
Get ready for the tears as Mabel finds herself rescued by newly adoptive parents Eva Longoria and Rob Corddry, and their daughter Amelia. This new unit struggles to bond until Mabel comes long. You’ll have to watch the movie to see what happens next. But know that your heart will be filled when it comes to an end.
Shout outs go to Tig Notaro for her hilarious dry pan Dr Danielle, and to Michael Cassidy and Lauren Lapkus for being very attractive and very funny. Love their storyline! Also to Phoebe Neidhardt as weather reporter Alexa. Super funny! All in all this is a great family movie. Its a great date movie. Go see it with your best friend, a group of friends, your book club. Just see it. Its in theaters on August 8th.
