Best of LA: Barre Classes

Although the exercises used in barre classes are not necessarily new…they are based in traditional ballet dance technique and training….the many barre classes available in LA all seem to have a new twist. Most are founded in the original Lotte Berk method, but each of the below studios has added movements that make their barre practice their own. We have tried many of the classes below and are big barre fans. The isometrics and stretching components in all barre classes really work! Stick with it and you will see results. You just have to find the studio that is right for you.

cardio barreCARDIO BARRE

With locations all over Los Angeles, Cardio Barre offers a high-energy, no-impact, fat-burning workout that tones a sculpts you. Central to the workout are toning and resistance exercises for the butt, legs, torso and arms.  Founder, Richard Giorla, used his expertise from more than 30 years as a dancer and choreographer to create this fitness class. I recently tried the class and one of the things I loved most about it was the incorporation of dance movement at the bar. Leg lifts, arm poses and movements that made me feel as if I was in a ballet class rather than a fitness workout. The energy is very high-paced with pop music playing and yet an element of traditional dance mixed in. As Richard says “When you work at the barre you have a sense of center and balance that allows you to concentrate on the muscle group you are working on. The body is worked as both a coordinated whole and in isolated muscle groups, maximizing the body’s full potential.” Want to try out a class? If light weights, fitness, floor work and core work are more your speed you will love Pure Barre. I loved how much I felt every little muscle in my core, glutes and inner thighs being worked during and after. Pure Barre is about strength building and they take an athletic approach to the barre method. In their own words “In just 55 minutes you will achieve a full-body workout concentrating on the areas women struggle with the most: hips, thighs, seat, abdominals and arms. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, protecting your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The latest addition to the scene is Physique 57 in Beverly Hills. This studio was formed by Lotte Berk devotee Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi and one of Lotte’s top teachers, Tanya Becker. Their modern and innovative take on the Lotte Berk method has developed many more fans in the Physique 57 studios around the world. As they say “What happens when you blend a barre-based workout with intervals of cardio, strength training, stretching and recovery? The Physique 57 workout, where arms, thighs, seat and abs get sculpted in the form of long, lean, gorgeous muscles.
