Meet Tracy Fredkin, Founder of CityMoms

Being a mom is a lot of work but CityMoms makes it easier. As moms we manage the schedules, plan social activities, coordinate the carpools and run the households, in addition to being our kids personal tutor, chef and life guide. Oh – and then there’s our careers, and trying to have time for ourselves and time with our partners. You know, its busy.

So how do we make life a little easier for moms? At MomAngeles, we introduce you to people like Tracy Fredkin. Tracy is the founder of CityMoms, an app that saves you time and effort when it comes to kids activities.

Tell us a little about CityMoms?

CityMoms App helps busy parents discover, book and access in real time the best local activities in their communities.   The App is a personalized tool which makes it much faster and easier to find activities that suit your family’s lifestyle and schedule. Once you find an activity you like, you can also book and check in directly from the CityMoms App.   We have real time inventory updates from our local partners. That means we know when and where there are spaces at classes, play venues, museums and events around the city.   In addition, we showcase many free events and activities that would otherwise be hard to find. Parents can book and pay as they go or take advantage of one convenient monthly membership providing access to activities at members’ only prices.   The App is completely free to download and use as a daily scheduler.

What made you want to start this company?

The idea for CityMoms came from our time spent building a hyper-local community and events company in Southern California.   We continually received feedback about how much families loved and appreciated discovering new things in their communities, but how hard they were to find on a daily basis.  I had the same challenge with my son and found myself wasting time and money looking for activities and never really finding what we were passionate about. I thought there must be a better way and when I saw all the amazing talent in the communities that was going unrecognized, we decided to build CityMoms to help match families to the activities and resources in their communities.

What is it about LA that benefits your business most?

In LA, we are extremely lucky to have access to the best educational, cultural and enriching experiences and places to share with our kids.  Our job is easy -discovering family friendly activities and local talent because it is so abundant here. I feel that my son has had unique experiences far beyond what we would have access to in other places.

Tell us a little about yourself. Are you an LA native? Where did you grow up? How did you end up in LA?

I grew up in the Bay Area in a small town called Los Gatos.   But I’ve moved around quite a bit from Boston for college to NYC for a job on wall street and then to LA years ago to attend UCLA Law School.   LA has been a great fit for our family.

What your favorite local spot to meet up with friends?

During the day, we meet up at Fryman Canyon for hikes which is one of my favorite things to do in LA.   For a night out, we are loving the Local Peasant.   A cool casual bar and restaurant in Sherman Oaks with the best soft pretzels!
