Win a FREE Earthquake Kit by Emergency Kits 4 All

Let’s face it, L.A. has more than enough earthquakes to remind us all that we need to be prepared in the event of the “big one.” It’s not something most of us moms want to think about. If you’re like me, it took a well-informed neighbor to encourage me to gather the basic necessities for an earthquake kit. That was years ago. It’s time for me to update my kit! Are you one of those people who, like me, let your earthquake preparedness essentials get lost, misplaced or outdated?

Help has arrived! Emergency Kits 4 All is a Los Angeles based company that offers a variety of earthquake kits for your every need. Company founder Christal Smith has an extensive background in disaster preparedness, including certifications and training from the Los Angeles Fire Department, the Red Cross and the Department of Homeland Security. Ms. Smith writes on emergency preparedness issues for The Huffington Post and is often interviewed on National Public Radio in Southern California as an expert on disaster preparedness. The company has been featured on KNBC-Channel 4 and Fox News.

We need to do some more duck & cover practice!

  2. Elisa says:

As an east coast girl, the thought of EQ is pretty terrifying! This would certainly help me feel better prepared :)

  3. Leighton says:

Mama needs some help to make sure her family is ready and safe for an emergency. It would be much appreciated!

  4. Alina Serrao says:

With 3 kids under 5 yr old, its not easy to teach & prepare them, only one command if it hits! UNDER THE TABLE! we all fit. I have experienced the Loma Prieta in San Fran 89, it was very scary, was not prepared at all. Also no cell phones then, how do you contact your loved ones! Hope our & other families can be safe from unexpected quakes.

  5. Mrs.Muneton says:

We stockpile water in the gallon jugs. I buy one or two a week. Makes me feel a little better to hope that if water service were disrupted my kids wouldn’t go thirsty.

  6. LeJ says:

I have informed all family member of a meeting place if we are not able to return home and that we must, if possible, place information about where we are. The location is something large like a school or Home Depot.

  7. Ceci says:

This would be a great beginning for us. I’ve talked to my kid about what to do and I’m glad that the school is also doing its part.

  8. gwendolen says:

The only thing we’ve done so far is get a supply of water (since we have a tankless water heater). Now that my kids are 4 years old, I’m feeling like I really need to get on top of teaching them about what to do in an emergency. I’m thinking that teaching them about earthquake preparedness during an earthquake is not the best timing. So, even if I don’t win, thanks for reminding me of one more thing to put on my mommy-to-do-list!

  9. Cigal Shaham says:

We are prepared by retrofitting the bolting in our house to better withstand EQ damage, and practicing emergency drills with our almost 4 year old. I need an EQ kit!

  10. Lindsey says:

We have a couple of cases of water, batteries, flashlights and some canned food. We need a radio, matches and a few other essentials to complete our kit. We also don’t have a car kit.
My husband and I have a plan on where to meet if we can’t contact each other and we know where we will go if we need to/can leave the city.

  11. Jennifer says:

I have a whistle and it’s not enough! I’m terrified of earthquakes!

  12. Ken says:

We have a large barrel of water made from polycarbon…actually, we have two, one 5-gallon and one 15-gallon, lots of food that is either in vacuum-sealed pouches or is canned, we have peanut butter, and have lots of cat food for our cat. We also have a list of emergency numbers and places to meet if we cannot return to our house.

  13. Lots says:

We have a trash can with emergency food. It is key to be prepared!

  14. Matt says:

We’re not preparing specifically for earthquakes, but we are preparing for general GOOD scenarios, with BOBs and all. An EQ kit would be a nice addition.

  15. Sonia Lent says:

You NEVER know when you’re going to need an emergency kit … where earthquakes are so prevalent – this would be only one of several kits I would keep on hand.

  16. Honey says:

Living in Los Angeles, I definitely need one with my growing family. My little one knows to duck under the table, but This kit woul be ideal because an Earthquake seems to happen every other week now.

  17. We always keep a large supply of water and nonperishable food items in stock.

  18. Amber k says:

We are starting to collect/coupon for batteries, water bottles, and foods that won’t perish easily. Trying to build a good supply-one step at a time. :o )

  19. Kecia Maxwell says:

My daughter and I moved to Los Angeles 7 months and we have a suitcase on wheels ready with extra underwear, clothes, water, hand wipes, granola bars, first-aid kit and flashlight. Having to run for safety on 9-11 I know that disasters can happen at a moments notice and I want us to be as prepared as much as possible. I have even talked to my daughter about who she should call, who is safe and what should she do if we are apart if an earthquake strikes. I pray that we will not have to experience “the big one”.

  20. Laura Gerson says:
