Target and Soleil Moon Frye Help Moms (and Kids) Avoid “Summer Slide”

Last week I had the opportunity to speak with LA Mom, published author, blogger, entrepreneur and Target Ambassador Soleil Moon Frye about what she does with her little ones over the Summer to prevent “Summer Slide.”

Research shows that, without practice, students lose reading skills over the summer months. This lag is called the “Summer Slide.” With vacations and camps, it can be easy to forget the lessons learned during the course of the school year. Furthermore, the cognitive loss can be cumulative, meaning students are constantly playing catch up.

In the spirit of encouraging Summer reading Target has offered our MomAngeles readers an opportunity to win a $50.00 gift certificate and (10) age-appropriate books for ONE lucky winner!

TO WIN comment below about what you do with your kids over the Summer to avoid “Summer Slide” or offer creative suggestions for other Moms who are reading this post! Drawing will be held this Friday!

Soleil offers some terrific tips in this interview including taking field trips, reading favorite books, travel and other ideas to make learning fun. Check out the interview!

Take reading outside! Have a “campout” in the backyard and read and act-out stories with flashlights.

Step it up with chapter books and keep them wanting more…read when they wake up and before bed. They always want to hear more.

We just started this last week…we bought a large dry-erase board and hung it in the dining room. I tend to finish eating before the kids do, so after I’m done, I stand up and start writing math problems on the board. The kids are really enthusiastic about shouting out the answers, and I have a captive audience because they’re sitting down to eat anyway.

We also do a lot of reading, workbook practice, and trips to the library and bookstore.

  5. Livivua Chandler says:

We do a lot of swimming and crafts.
